With a select public of 37,100 visitors and 183 official delegations from 81 countries in attendance, the 11th edition of the LAAD Defence & Security Exposition exceeded all previous editions. From April 4 to April 7, the largest and most important defence and security exposition in Latin America put products and solutions from 450 exhibiting brand companies and 36 countries on display, consolidating LAAD‘s strategic role of the global market for security and defence.
This year over 2000 meetings were held between the delegates and exhibitors. "We have already had feedback from exhibitors about the scheduling of official delegations, which was very positive. The exhibition was also a great hit with the public" said Sergio Jardim, the Director General of Clarion Events Brazil, the organizer of LAAD. 2017
Another important part of the event was the meetings of the principal leaders in public security in Brazil that brought together 442 authorities - State Secretaries of Public Security, General Commanders of the Military Police and Fire Fighters, Civil Police Chiefs, experts from the field of criminal investigation, among many others from every State in Brazil for a four-day period.
While visiting the LAAD Defence & Security Exhibition, President Michel Temer stressed the importance of National Defence industry in the process of economic recovery of the country. "I found here a thriving industry that represents the restoration of confidence in the growth of the economy and underscores Brazil's export potential for products and solutions in the high technology defence segment," he said.
Also present at the event, Minister of Finance Henrique Meirelles left an optimistic message: "Brazil is beginning to return to growth. We anticipate positive results in the first quarter and an increase of 30% in investment over the rest of the year. That is a reflection of the ambitious infrastructure investment project that the Government is committed to making. The defence segment is an important contributor to this process because of its generation of high technology content and because the industry offers wages that higher than the national average, and this has an impact on the economy."
An example of the importance of the segment to the national economy is the international line of funding for countries that have an interest in buying the national defence industry products and solutions presented during LAAD 2017, many for the first time. "Our goal is to consolidate the Government’s policy of strengthening the industrial base of Brazil through this segment. We need to be more creative and look for new markets to generate more jobs," stressed the Defence Minister, Raul Jungmann. According to Jungmann, the defence and security industry currently represents 3.7% of GDP, moving about of R$ 200 billion annually, and generates 30,000 direct jobs and 120,000 indirect jobs in Brazil. The Ministry of Defence, along with the three Armed Forces-the Navy, the Army and the Air Force, is now an official supporter of the event.
The significant presence of international delegations was an important feature of the LAAD Defence & Security 2017 Exhibition. Embraer Defence and Security, the main sponsor of the event, for example, was host to more than 50 official delegations during the exhibition, most of them eager to learn more about the KC-390 cargo aircraft project. "The LAAD Exhibition is an excellent event because it offers the opportunity for the approximation between companies and international groups interested in our solutions. The result is always positive and helps Brazil’s defence industry become even more respected, "noted CEO Jackson Schneider.
International companies also praised the success of the event. "LAAD is a very important event on our calendar and we are proud to have been present at yet another edition of the exhibition. Latin America is a priority for Thales, and contributes to our company’s overall growth. We have high expectations for the region. We are expanding our product portfolio through key partnerships and local production, to provide our customers excellence in our products and services in domestic and export markets," said Ruben Lazo, Vice-President of Thales Latin America.
